The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Elizabeth was born April 18, 1914, the eldest of three children born to John Lewis Wiggins, Sr. and Margaret Montgomery Wiggins in the family home on Camden Rd., Holly Hill, S.C. She completed the eleven grades of the Holly Hill Public Schools in ten years. She graduated cum laude from Winthrop College in 1934, where, among other activities, she was a member of the Senior Order, editor of the Winthrop Journal, and a member of the College Glee Club. She taught English at Ninety Six High School in 1934-35, and at Columbia High School for the next seven years, where she was advisor for the school's literary magazine. In 1942, she enrolled in the Duke University Graduate School, where she earned a M.A. degree in English and was awarded the Angier P. Duke fellowship, the highest honor in the Graduate School. She later taught at the Hartford branch of the University of Connecticut. While residing in Berkeley, California, Elizabeth was instrumental in the development of a master plan for education for the Berkeley Unified School District, and founded the Berkeley Association for the Gifted. Returning to Holly Hill in 1973, she taught English and French in the Holly Hill and Holly Hill-Roberts High Schools, and served as an advisor to a program for gifted students. She retired from teaching in 1982 and lived for some years in Charleston, S.C. During this time she enjoyed serving as a docent at Middleton Place, and became active in the League of Women Voters, taking a leadership role in the efforts of that organization on behalf of state educational policies. In 2004, Elizabeth returned to California to be with her son and his family. She passed away peacefully, in their company, on November 13, 2006. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Benton Knight, of Rockville, MD; son Jonathan Goodnow Knight, of El Cerrito, CA; four grandchildren; her sister Margaret Wiggins Uzzle of Holly Hill; and nieces and nephews, children of her sister Margaret and her late brother John Lewis Wiggins, Jr. Memorials may be made to Target United Methodist Church, PO Box 1303, Holly Hill, SC 29059.
