JAMES SLACK: In the death in Toronto on Wednesday March 2nd, of Elizabeth Slack, widow of the late Jas. Slack, one of the earliest and truly pioneer settlers of Melancthon, has passed away. The deceased was in her 81st year, and was born in Belfast, Ireland. In the early days of Melancthon township, she, with her late husband, who predeceased her many years ago, settled on the farm upon which the present member for Dufferin, T. K. Slack, now resides. The late Mr. Slack was one of the most prominent men in the township in those days; his name was a household word in every home; and for some years he served as deputy-reeve. Of late years the deceased had been living with the different members of her family, and it was while on a visit with her son, Wm., in Toronto, that she suffered a fainting spell and fell downstairs, sustaining severe injuries, from which she later succumbed in the hospital. Deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John H. Hicks of Amaranth, who was present at her bedside when the end came; and four sons, Jas. and Jacob of Edgar, Ont.; Wm. of Toronto, and Thos. of Matheson, New Ontario. T. K. Slack, M.P.P. for Dufferin, is a nephew and Jas. Webster of Horning's Mills is a grandson of the deceased. The remains were brought to Shelburne on the evening train on Thursday last and the funeral took place on Friday from the home of her daughter, Mrs. John H. Hicks, Lot 30, Con. 5, Amaranth, to the Gravel Road cemetery, Melancthon, the service at the house and grave being conducted by Rev. J. B. Backus, pastor of the Congregational church.
