She was baptized on September 25, 1927 and later confirmed at Immanuel Evangelical & Reformed Church in Clarksville. Read More	Ella Julia Christians, age 89, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Otto and Hulda (Nordman) Ulrich on July 20, 1927, in rural Clarksville. She was baptized on September 25, 1927 and later confirmed at Immanuel Evangelical & Reformed Church in Clarksville. Ella graduated valedictorian of her class on May 22, 1944, from Clarksville High School. After graduation Ella worked as a hired girl for many families. On December 8, 1946, Ella was united in marriage with Simon Fred Christians at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. The couple lived near Shell Rock and then in rural Allison area where they farmed and raised their family. In the summer of 1984, Ella and Simon moved to Clarksville. From 1988 to 2009 Ella worked at the Clarksville Public Library. Ella was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ Clarksville. Ella always had a large garden and out of necessity, she did a lot of canning. She was a wonderful cook, and every Saturday she would make homemade bread and biscuits. Ella also made delicious homemade pizza and cookies. She loved to read and had a great sense of humor. Ella’s greatest joy was time spent with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and she especially loved the babies. Ella died Friday, July 22, 2016 at Clarksville Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville. She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Simon; a daughter, Beverly Westendorf; an infant daughter, Mary Ellen; two grandsons, Greg Rottink and Landon Schoonover; her parents; two sisters, Arlene Pierce and Leona Ulrich and one brother, Arnold Ulrich. Ella is survived by six sons, Robert (Alberta) Christians of Swaledale, Dennis Christians of Clarksville, Donald (Dianne) Christians of Iowa Falls, Ronald (Donna) Christians of Fairbank, Dale (Noreen) Christians of Urbandale and Steve (Melissa) Christians of Dunkerton; three daughters, Diane (Richard) Schoonover of Fredericksburg, Connie (Calvin) Rottink of Clarksville and Karla (Bryan) Voss of Clarksville; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren with one more soon to be born; one son-in-law, Ron Westendorf of Allison and one sister, Helen Freese of Clarksville. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, with burial in the Lynwood Cemetery both in Clarksville. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, (319)278-4245, and one hour before services at the church.
