Description	:	Ella Mae (Maxwell) Stephens was born June 12, 1897 in Clay Co., South Dakota, the daughter of Riley and Margaret (O'Donnell) Maxwell. She married Grant Earl Stephens, son of Joseph W. & Augusta C. (Rilbe) Stephens, June 3, 1925 in Clay Co., SD. They were the parents of Bonnie Mae and Robert Earl Stephens. Her husband, Grant, died in Beadle Co., SD April 26, 1956. Ella Mae had a farm sale October 1, 1956, 6 miles north, 4 miles west, and 1/4 south of Wessington. (Location: Grand Twp., HAND Co., SD) Add'l info found: Ella Mae was a school teacher, having attended Southern State Normal, University of South Dakota, and Northern State Teachers College. In 1931, the family moved to Meade County and lived on a sheep ranch near Union Center, South Dakota. From 1933-1943, they lived on several places in Jackson County, near Kadoka. In 1943, Earl, Ella Mae, and son, Robert moved again to rural Meade Co., near Piedmont, leaving Bonnie to graduate high school that May in Kadoka while staying with Ross and Augusta Warner. They were still in Piedmont at the time of the 1945 SD State Census, but were living near Wessington, SD in August 1947, at the time of Bonnie's wedding. The reason for the move was because Ella Mae had been offered a teaching job in the Wessington area. I found in various news articles that she was to teach in rural Grand Twp., Hand Co. in the fall of 1948, 1949, again in 1955 and in Carlton Twp. in 1958. When I knew her, she was living in St. Lawrence, Hand Co., SD, and she taught 7th & 8th grades in the school years of 1959-1960, 1960-1961, and 1961-1962. The last year of the high school was with the graduating class of 1962, after which the school was designated as a "Common School". Ella Mae continued to teach 7th & 8th for the term of 1962-1963. I haven't found more teaching info, but have to think she moved from St. Lawrence probably spring of 1963. You'd think I'd remember...as she only lived a block from me!
