Darnell, Thomas Gordon Darnell Ella Margaret Smith was born in Kearney county, May 9, 1889, grew up and resided here until her marriage to B. F. Darnell. Since then, she, with her husband, have lived at different places where Mr. Darnell has been depot agent including Marion, Wauneta and Culbertson, the present home. To this union four sons were born, Everett, Gordon, Virgil, and Eugene. She has been a Christian and member of the church since girlhood. The past few years she has been much interested in the Womens Christian Temperance Union in which she was very active; a christian lady, faithful wife and devoted mother. Her illness was of short duration and the end came unexpectedly last Saturday morning at 10:30 at the home in Culbertson. To mourn her loss there are the husband and children, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Smith, a sister, Mrs. F. O. Curtis, and a brother, Nate, who lives in California, with a very large circle of friends here and elsewhere. The funeral services were conducted Monday, August 9, at 2:30 at the Methodist church, M. B. Carman preaching the sermon. The altar rail and the whole front of the platform were covered with a very generous offering of flowers. The body was laid away in the Minden cemetery. Monday night Mr. Darnell accompanied by his mother and brother, Warren, went back on No. 3 to the home in Culbertson where the three younger children were left under quarantine with Gordon very dangerously ill. The heart-broken father reached home at 2:00 A. M. and at 3:00 A. M. little Gordon passed away. The body was brought to Minden Tuesday on No. 10 accompanied by the father and the two other children, Virgil and Eugene who were the first to take the fever, but who had it quite light and are now well. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the home of the grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Smith, and the little body was laid to rest beside the mother buried but two days before. Thmoas Gordon was born in Minden, September 16, 1907. Mr. Darnell has the most tender sympathy of the entire community in this his double and great sorrow; it seems to be more than one man can bear. The following relatives from out of town attended both funerals: Mrs. N. E. Darnell, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. of Fort Calhoun, Thos. Darnell of Wauneta, Warren Darnell of McCook.
