Interment will be in the Minden cemetery. Mr. Darnell, 67, died Sunday night at the Seeley hospital, where he had been taken two weeks ago. He had been in ill health for some time. Born at Wilcox in 1882, he was graduated from the Minden high school in 1900. He went to work for the C. B. & Q. Railroad right after his graduation, staying until about 1920. He was a telegrapher. Mr. Darnelll long has been active in political affairs and was a strong democrat. He served two terms as Kearney county clerk from 1923 to 1931, was secretary to Congressman Charles Binderup from 1935 to 1938 in Washington. More recently he has been secretary of the Minden Chamber of Commerce, being given a leave of absence the past several weeks because of his poor health. Mr. Darnell was affable and gregarious, was liked by an exceptionally wide circle of acquaintances. Typical comment includes that of Former Congressman C. G. Binderup, in which he said Bert was a servant of the people just as much as the elected congressmen, "serving behind the lines." Minden Attorney B. H. Bracken says he never "got along with a fellow so well whom I disagreed with politically so much." Survivors are his wife; sons, Everett, Mill Valley, Calif.; Virgil, Bellmont, Calif.; Eugene, Santa Rosa, Calif. Additional information will be available for the obituary in the Courier next week. (Note: According to Bert's WWI Draft Registration, he was born Oct. 21, 1881. The above obit states he was born in 1882. The obit below has Oct. 20, 1881. June 23, 1949 Pg.. 9 Last rites were held for B. F. Darnell Thursday afternoon at 2:00 at the Methodist church in Minden. The services were in charge of Rev. A. W. Johnson. Organ music was played by Mrs. L. E. Weedlun and the vocal music was by Donald H. Helzer. The Masonic and I.O.O.F. lodges attended as groups. Burial was in the Minden cemetery, the interment rites being in charge of the Masonic Lodge. Pallbearers were members of the Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Mr. Darnell being secretary of that organization at the time of his death. Bert Fisher Darnell was born at Wilcox, Nebr., on October 20, 1881. He passed from this life at the Seeley hospital in Minden, Nebr., June 12, 1949. He had reached the age of 67 years, seven months and 22 days. Mr. Darnell's entire early life was spent in Kearney county. He was graduated from the Minden high school in 1900. In 1904 he was married to Miss Ella Margaret Smith. Four sons were born to this union. Soon after his graduation from high school he went to work as a telegrapher for the Burlington railroad. He served as depot agent at Marion, at Wauneta and at Culbertson, also served as operator at the Minden depot for some time. The whole period of service to the Burlington covered a period of about twenty-two years. He came to the Minden depot in 1915. His career was also marked with his association with the Minden courier, an eight-year term as county clerk, secretary to C. G. Binderup during his service as Congressman from this district and as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce up to the time of his illness and death. Bert Darnell was one of Minden's greatest citizens. He was friendly beyond all reasonable expectations, and he was a natural born philosopher. His ideals of loyalty, service and truth made him a great friend and public servant. Likewise, those who knew him best bear testimony that he maintained those same ideals and qualities within the home as husband and father. Mr. Darnell was a member of the Masonic and I.O.O.F. lodges. He was not a member of the church, though he had confessed Christ and had given his word that he was uniting with the First Methodist church at the earliest possible opportunity. Mr. Darnell was preceded in death by his wife, Ella, on August 7, 1915, and by a son, Gordon, seven years old, on August 10, 1915. December 2, 1925, he married Stella Brainard. He is survived by his wife, Stella, and by three sons, William Everett of Mill Valley, Calif.; Virgil M., Belmont, Calif.; Eugene Nathan, Santa Rosa, Calif., all of whom were present for the service. He also leaves six grandchildren.
