Jensen and Marie Neve, was born on September 2, 1911, on a farm northeast of Ringsted in Emmet County of Denmark Township. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ringsted. Ella attended Seneca School and graduated in 1931. That fall she attended Iowa State Teacher's College and a year later began teaching in a rural school southeast of Ringsted until 1936. In the fall of 1936, she enrolled at Buena Vista College where she received her elementary teacher's certificate and in 1937, she began teaching fifth grade in Titonka. On August 28, 1941, she married Amey Cherland of Lone Rock at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ringsted. They were members of Blakjer Lutheran Church in Seneca and Ella was a member of the LCW and a Sunday school teacher there. For 35 years Ella and Amey farmed and lived northeast of Lone Rock. Four children were born to this union, Don, Roger, Phyllis and Steve. For five years she was assistant leader of the Lone Rock Lively Rockets 4-H Club. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau Women and Idle Hour Club. Throughout life she enjoyed gardening and growing flowers, sewing, making quilts, cooking and baking. Her biggest joy in life was her children and grandchildren. In 1976, Amey and Ella retired and moved to Algona where they became members of First Lutheran and Ella was part of the Sarah's Circle. They helped deliver meals-on-wheels for many years and did other volunteer work. Even in their older age, whether in a wheel chair or not able to hear things well they always found a way to make it to church. Ella was a resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Algona for a little over three years before she died Thursday, December 27, 2007. She was 96. Ella is survived by three sons, Don and Debbie Cherland of New Brighton, MN; Roger and Cheryl Cherland of Lone Rock; Steve and Darlene Cherland of Lone Rock; son-in-law, Bob Rod of Phoenix, AZ; 10 grandchildren, Jason Rod and Sonja McLaughlin; Jennifer, John, and Jill Cherland; Keith, Kevin and Cole Cherland; Tina and Andrew Cherland; six great-grandchildren: Carson, Brennan and Tatum McLaughlin; Arianna, Brylee and Cahryn Rod. Also surviving are brothers-in-law, Julian Cherland, Carl Carlson and Frank Long and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Amey in 2002; daughter Phyllis in 1998; two brothers, Vernon and Stanley and other sister and brother-in-laws.
