Description	:	Ellen Grace Carstens was born on June 17, 1897 in Willow township near Charter Oak, the daughter of August Aronson and Hannah Nelson Aronson. She died on Tuesday January 20 1987 in Denison, Iowa at the age of 89 years 4 months and 27 days. Ellen was raised on the family farm and received her education in the rural schools. Together they made their home on a... Read More	Ellen Grace Carstens was born on June 17, 1897 in Willow township near Charter Oak, the daughter of August Aronson and Hannah Nelson Aronson. She died on Tuesday January 20 1987 in Denison, Iowa at the age of 89 years 4 months and 27 days. Ellen was raised on the family farm and received her education in the rural schools. On April 29, 1920 Ellen was united in marriage to Conrad Henry Carstens of Charter Oak, Iowa. The marriage was preformed in Sioux City, Iowa. To this union 6 children were born. Together they made their home on a farm near Charter Oak. In 1940 they purchased a farm in Charter Oak township near Berne, where they farmed until they retired in 1968. They continued to live on the farm until 1972 when they moved into Charter Oak. Mr Carstens passed away on March 9, 1976. Ellen lived in her home until Dec 29, 1980 when she moved into Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where she resided until her death. Ellen was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak and the United Methodist Women Society. She was also and member of the Homer Hall Post No 66 American Legion Auxiliary for many years. In addition to her parents and her husband, Ellen was preceded in death by 1 daughter Donna Mae Carstens, 1 son Lawrence Carstens who was killed in WW II, 1 grandson who served in the Vietnam War, 1 sister Lillian Weed and 3 brothers Harry, Fred and John Aronson. Survivors are 1 daughter Maurine and her husband Walter Holtorf of Denison; 3 sons Lowell Carstens of Ute, Gale Carstens of Lake View and John and his wife Margie Carstens of Tempe, Arizona, 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 1 brother Melvin Aronson of Sioux City, 2 sisters Anna Haugan and Vera Hansen both of Sioux City, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Jan 23, 1987 at teh United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, with burial in the Charter Oak Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Dean, Randy, Richard and Kevin Carstens, and Murlyn and Lloyd Aronson.
