Description	:	It is with great sadness that we, the family of Mrs. Ellen M. East, announce the death of our beloved mother, sister, sister-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, godmother, aunt, and friend, who passed through the Gates of Heaven on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006 at St. Peter's Hospital, in Helena. She was in her 81st year. Ellen was born May 10, 1926, to Stephen F. and Annie (Wagenbach) Petek in East Helena. She married Stanley Edwin East on May 19, 1956, and they were happily married for 43 years. During that time they traveled extensively throughout the U.S., eventually visiting 28 different states. East, announce the death of our beloved mother, sister, sister-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, godmother, aunt, and friend, who passed through the Gates of Heaven on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006 at St. Peter's Hospital, in Helena. She was in her 81st year. Ellen was born May 10, 1926, to Stephen F. and Annie (Wagenbach) Petek in East Helena. She married Stanley Edwin East on May 19, 1956, and they were happily married for 43 years. During that time they traveled extensively throughout the U.S., eventually visiting 28 different states. She was employed for many years at Brackman's Market and Purcell's Market in Helena located in what was known as the Depot District, where she developed many lifelong friendships with her "Sixth Ward Brats." Ellen along with Stan devoted 30-plus years to assisting the V.F.W. Post 10010 Auxiliary with their various community service projects. In the auxiliary, she was a tremendous leader and was elected and served as the auxiliary president for two years and district president for two years. She also held numerous chairmanships at the department level. She gave a special gift to the East Helena elementary schools with the Loyalty Day Essay Competition, a program started by Ellen and "Fuzz" Dolan in the 1960s. A Loyalty Day traveling trophy is awarded every year to the class with the greatest participation, and it is named after Stan and Ellen East. She volunteered more than 4,000 hours to civic and community affairs in East Helena and at Fort Harrison in Helena. Another great memory was when she organized a large cookie drive for the sailors and Marines involved in the special operations in the Persian Gulf in the mid 1980s. She and other volunteers sent out 200 large boxes to various ships stationed there. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Stan, brother Steve Petek, daughter Rita Rae Howlett, and granddaughter Destiny East. Ellen will be forever missed by her sons and daughter-in-law, Stan and Sandy East of Bent, N.M., and Bill East of Missoula; daughters and sons-in-law Rose Ann and Robert Wellman of San Antonio, Texas, Ida Mae Pruitt of Belgrade, Christine Ullman of Bozeman, and Barbara and Ed Klein of Marysville, Wash., and sons-in-law Forrest "Sox" Ullman and Greg Howlett. She is also survived by her brother Jim Petek; and her sisters Garnet Dietrich and Marie Moore all of East Helena. She also leaves behind grandchildren, Sharlene and Carl Howell, Ted East, Sarah East, Christopher and Karen Wellman, Michael Wellman, Mark Wellman, Seanna and Wendell Gibby, Jaydee and Mike Shepherd, Jed Dempster, Jim and Kathy Ullman, Jennifer and Leif Oiestad, Justin Ullman, Jeff and Heather Howlett, Nick and Sandy Howlett, Cyndie Lockett, Kelley Howlett and Nathan Helfrich, Mija Howlett, Jessi Howlett and Mike Loppie, and Angie Howlett, Kristy Klein, Monica Klein, and Rita Rae Klein. Great-grandchildren include Joshua and Shiri Howell, Brittany, Cassie, and Austin East, Jamie and Sean Gibby, Ashlynn and Abby Shepherd, Mayana Dempster, Megan and Mitchell Ullman, Christian Kerr and Josie Howlett, Ariah Loppie, Mackenzie Klein and Alex Tyndall, and Gabriel Klein. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. We will remember her fondly as Gramma Ellen, Gramm, Grannie Grump, and Grandma-in-the-Green House. Visitation will begin Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. at the Retz Funeral Home. A vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the Retz Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in East Helena. Interment will be at St. Ann's Cemetery with a special tribute by the Officers of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 10010. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to V.F.W.
