Description	:	James "Jim" Peter Petek passed away Wednesday afternoon Jan. 30, 2008, after a battle with a long illness. Jim was born Oct. 20, 1924, in East Helena to Steve and Annie Petek. He attended St. Ann's Catholic Schools. Jim played baseball for the famous East Helena Smelterites from 1939 to 1940, and from 1953 to 1959. Read More	James "Jim" Peter Petek passed away Wednesday afternoon Jan. 30, 2008, after a battle with a long illness. Jim was born Oct. 20, 1924, in East Helena to Steve and Annie Petek. He attended St. Ann's Catholic Schools. Jim played baseball for the famous East Helena Smelterites from 1939 to 1940, and from 1953 to 1959. He coached for the East Helena Little League for many years, passing his great love for baseball on to many East Helena youth. In 1943, Jim joined the U.S. Navy and attended school at the Naval Training Center in Idaho. He was then assigned to the ETO (European Theater of Operation) in the Mediterranean and Asiatic Pacific. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. Jim married Bessie Reardon on May 9, 1946, in Helena. Jim and Bessie moved to Lincoln in 1949, where Jim drove the "Lincoln Stage" between Lincoln and Helena. This was the only mass transportation and mail courier service to and from Lincoln for many years; the trip was made daily from Lincoln to Silver City. In 1953, Jim and Bessie moved back to East Helena, at which time Jim went to work for Clover Leaf Dairy delivering milk. Later on, they purchased Frank's Place in East Helena and operated the business for 18 years. During this time, Jim also worked at the East Helena smelter until he retired. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bessie; daughters, Sherri Petek and Linda Ryckman; sister, Ellen East; and grandson, Billy Petek. Jim is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Connie (McLaughlin) Petek; son-in-law, Mark Ryckman; sisters, Garnet Dietrich and Marie Moore; grandsons, Andy Petek, Bryan Aughney and Kasey Winegardner; and great-grandchildren, Jake and Tylee. Interment services with military honors will be held at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison.
