Description	:	Ellen “Nellie” McArdle Census reports in 1870, 1880, & 1900 at first created confusion as to which sister was eldest. The enumerator for the 1870 census mixed up Mary with Margaret, reversing their names and ages. Although in each census, Ellen "Nellie" was the second of the three sisters, a copy of a birth record certified in October 1906 reported Ellen McArdle with a May 9, 1867, date of birth and the third child. Instead, the May 9 birthdate (and third child status) is that of Margaret "Maggie" McArdle, not her older sister, Ellen. Age 5 in 1870 census or either 1864 or 1865 Although the 1900 census reports her birthdate as October 1871, the information was probably provided to the census taker by her brother-in-law Charles D. Tiffany as head of household, whose information was inaccurate for all three McArdle ladies living with him in 1900.
