Lane, surgeon C.S.A., and one of the most beloved and highly esteemed residents of the County, died at her home "Woodstock," on East River, in Mathews County, on Sunday morning November 21st, 1926. She had been ill for a number of years and the most devoted care possible to be given any one was unavailing to prevent the gradual flickering out of the feeble spark of life. Mrs. Lane was the oldest and last surviving child of the late George Edward and Mary Harrison Randolph Tabb, and was widely connected with prominent families throughout the State. She was born at "Toddsbury," Gloucester County, on October 6, 1845 and was in her 82nd year at the time of her death. Few residents of the county have by the lives they have lived, left a deeper imprint for good upon the people of their community and the County. By her close association with the Academy formerly conducted at "Woodstock" she grew to know all the young people of the community at that time. To them she was indeed a mother, earning by her loving care their devotion and enduring loyalty. But her influence was not connected to these young people, for her kindly and gracious ministrations of those bereaved or in trouble and her deep personal piety she was endeared to the people of her community and to all with whom she came in touch. She was a life long, active, consecrated communicant of the Protestant Episcopal Church. The righteous cause for which Robert E. Lee fought; Stonewall Jackson bled, and Jefferson Davis lived and died a disfranchised citizen was ever dear to her heart. Her four children survive her: Miss Mary Randolph Lane, and Hon. G. E. T. Lane, County treasurer and former Legislator, of Mathews County; Mr. Thomas B. Lane, of Norfolk, and Rev. Henry Gardiner Lane, of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Raleigh, N.C. The funeral services were conducted at Christ Church, Kingston parish on Monday afternoon and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery at the Church. The rites were performed by two of her former rectors, Rev. William Byrd Lee, of Gloucester and Rev. Giles B. Cooke, of Mathews. A large crowd of sorrowing friends attended these services and the floral tributes were unusually numerous and beautiful.
