Lane Laid To Rest At Kingston Saturday afternoon, while friends stood with bowed heads in silent tribute, George Edward Tabb Lane, who died at "Woodstock" Thursday, after an illness of ten days, was laid to rest beneath the protecting branches of a holly tree, at a peaceful spot in beautiful Kingston Cemetery, a few paces from the threshold of old Christ Church, while from the branches of sorrowing pines came the faint, soft notes of a sad but beautiful requiem. Mr. Lane was a typical example of the traditional Southern gentleman with all the chivalry and high sense of honor attributed to the type. His friends were literally countless. It is said of him that he had more intimate acquaintances than any person in this County. His greetings were never casual, but with invariable warmth and courtesy he would express deep interest in the health and welfare of every member of one's family. His manner was the same to all - high and low, white and colored and thus he became one of the County's best known and most universally beloved citizens. Always intensely interested in politics, Mr. Lane was for many years prominently identified with the Democratic Party visiting stores in every section of the County, where, standing on a box behind the counter, he would with polished eloquence expound the virtues of his party's candidates, bring down the house with his inimitable humor and delight the ladies with beautifully phrased compliments. Mr. Lane, who was a scion of old Virginia families, was 64 years of age. He was a son of the late Dr. Thomas B. Lane and Mrs. Ellen Randolph Lane. He is survived by a sister, Miss Mary Randolph Lane, and two brothers, the Rev. Henry G. Lane, of Richmond, and Thom. B. Lane, of Norfolk. Returning from the Spanish-American War in 1898, he was elected treasurer of Mathews County in 1899. He served from July of that year to June 30, 1903, when, declining to run for re-election he retired from the office. November, 1905, he was elected he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from Mathews and Middlesex, retiring from office voluntarily after serving one term. In November, 1915, he was again elected County Treasurer. Taking over the office Jan. 1, 1916 he held it through three succeeding elections and resigned in September, 1928, after serving one year of his fifth term. The Rev. Geo. C. Shaw conducted the funeral services, assisted by the Rev. Henry G. Lane. The pallbearers were: J. J. Tabb, Chas. B. Tabb, Capt. Clarence Kirwan, Perry Williams, John Tabb DuVal and Van B. Sanders.
