Her mother had died when she was young. When she was about 13, her Father John Sargent Senior, a Builder by trade, took her and her siblings on the ship Kennebec from Liverpool, England to Saint Louis as part of the Westward movement of people from Europe considering the new "Religion" Mormonism. They boarded a paddle Steamboat called the Saluda to take them on the next leg of their journey to Council Bluffs, Iowa. En route the Saluda exploded killing our Great-Great-Great Grandfather John Sargent and his youngest son, Joseph, age 8. That left our Great Great Grandmother and her siblings orphans. They were: John Junior 17, Sarah Ann 16, Ellen 13 and Louisa 10. Louisa was badly scalded from the explosion. When GGG Grandfather John Sargent was killed he had $ 3,000 on him; when his body was recovered the money and most of his clothing was gone. Ellen was adopted by a family in St. Louis while her 3 siblings went with the family housekeeper Mrs. May, on the Mormon Trail, to Utah, Eli B. Kelsey Pioneer Company (1852). About 100 individuals were in the company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs). This company includes the first 28 saints from Scandinavia.
