(contact listed) Miss Martha Bremer. Below information provided by contributor #48206502: Great Grandma Lulu's parents were Ellen Sargent and Louis Bremer. Louis Bremer was in the Army, before the Civil War. During this time Brigham Young and his Mormon followers were practicing polygamy. The government in Washington D.C. dispatched troops out West to the territory that later became Utah, to break up the practice and the uprisings and violence that went with it. Louis Bremer was one of the soldiers sent there. For good luck he carried gold dollar pieces in his pocket. (What makes this story of even more interest is that his wife Ellen was related to some very prominent and famous Mormons. Ellen's sister Louisa married Martin Henderson Harris, his Uncle Martin Harris. was one the three witnesses that helped Joseph Smith with the Book of Mormon.), after his time in the service Louis moved his family to New York from St. Louis. In N.Y. he owned a furniture store and Ellen owned a hat and dress shop. When Lulu was about four her parent's traveled to Grass Valley, to mine for gold. They traveled by ship around Cape Horn and over the Isthmus of Panama. They had to walk or ride a mule over as there was no canal then. Somewhere along the way or shortly after arriving in California, . Ellen died. Our GG Grandfather Louis Bremer was an upholsterer in Grass Valley when he was not mining for gold. After Ellen died Louis married Emily Oshen. He had several more children with her. That is how we came to be related to the Kings in Iowa. His second wife Emily died at a young age from a burst appendix on Thanksgiving day. His Father Nathaniel Bremer was a bodyguard for Bismarck Chancellor of The New Modem Germany and past Prime Minister of Prussia. It is believed that he held this position while Bismarck was Prime Minister. Bremer and Boedecker are both Prussian names. People think that is the same as German but it is not the same, but they had their own culture and language. The language is closer to Dutch than German.
