Interment: 1 Feb 1930, Holy Cross Cemetery, Farrar, Polk, IA "Ellen Winifred Ryan, eldest daughter of Ellen and William Ryan, was born on May 1st, 1873, at Holy Cross Parish, near Maxwell, Iowa. Here she spent her childhood and early youth teaching in the public schools of Polk County for many years. "On February 26, 1900 she was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Daniel Halligan by Rev. Fr. James Quinn, in the Holy Cross Parish church of Holy Cross, located near Farrar, Iowa. To this union were born four children, William of Dexter, Iowa, John, Edward and Mary (Mrs. E.J. Morris) at home. "In 1917 she, with her family moved to Stuart, Iowa, where she made her home for twelve years, moving in 1929 to a farm near Cummings, Iowa. On account of her poor health the family moved to Valley Junction. She had been in poor health for several years but her sudden death came as a shock to many. "Mrs. Halligan was a longtime and devout member of the Catholic church; ever striving to attend mass and the sacraments. Her fervent devotion to St. Therese, the Little Flower of Jesus, was known to many. She had been a member of the Rosary and Altar Society for many years. A beautiful tribute to her life was paid by the Rev. Fr. Toher of Stuart, who in speaking of her, chose for his text these words: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter thou into the job of the Lord." "She was ever a loyal friend to those who knew her; kind and helpful to all who came her way. "A devoted mother to her family, her greatest happiness being her children and her home. "She is survived by her sorrowing husband and children, two grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. John Rooney of Farror [sic; Farrar], Iowa, Mrs. Margaret Tynon [sic; Tynan] of Cambridge, Iowa, Mrs. Thomas Markey and Miss Elizabeth Ryan, both of Prior Lake, Minn., and two brothers, Thomas of Waco, Texas and Cornelius of Denver, Colorado. "She was buried from Sacred Heart Church, Valley Junction on Saturday, Feb. 1st, at 9 o'clock. A requiem mass was sung by Rev. Fr. Gleason and the remains laid to rest at her old home, Holy Cross, where a large number of relatives and friends awaited to pay their last respects to one, dear in the hearts of them all. "The pall bearers were all nephews of the deceased: John Cash, William Rooney, William and Paul Ryan and Bernard and Thomas Tynan. "May she rest in Peace. "What is it all when all it told, "This ceaseless toiling for fame or gold "The fleeting joy or bitter tears? "We are only here a few short years; "Nothing our own but the silent past' "Loving or hating, nothing can last. "Each pathway leads to the silent fold "Oh! What is it all when all is told? "What is it all? A grassy mound, "Where day or night there is never a sound "Save the soft low mourn of the passing breeze, "As it lovingly rustles the silent trees. "Or a thoughtful friend with whisper and prayer, "May sometimes break the stillness there, "The hurry away from the gloom and cold. "Oh! What is it all when all it told "What is it all? - just passing through "A cross for me and a cross for you "Ours seem heavy while others seem light, "But God in the end makes all things right; "He 'tempers the wind' with such loving care, "He knows the burden that each one bear "Then changes life's gray into heavenly gold. "Ah! That is all when all is told." "We wish to thank our many friends for the kindnesses shown to us at the death of our beloved wife and mother. Daniel Halligan and family."
