Wood-Zabka Funeral Home of Seward is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Smutny was born Feb. 12 1917, on a farm near Octavia to Anton Vaclav and Anastazia (Shonka) Bohaty. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in December of 1972. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in December of 1972. Survivors of the immediate family include her son and daughter-in-law, Frank D. and Diane Smutny of Grand Island; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia J. and William R. Ramsay of Lincoln and Joyce M. McCourt of Auburn, Calif.; son-in-law, Maurice Hassenplug of Grand Island; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Bohaty of Owosso, Mich. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Mrs. Smutny grew up on a farm near Schuyler and was a graduate of Schuyler High School. She was united in marriage to Frank Emil Smutny on June 19, 1935, at Auburn. They lived for a short time in Bee before moving to the family farm in 1936. Ellice continued to live on the farm until after Frank's death when she moved to Grand Island in 1973. Ellice was a member of the Dwight Women's Extension Club, the ZCBJ Lodge No. 158 in Dwight, and a Seward Square Dance Club. She loved flowers and enjoyed garden tours, which meant sharing her flowers with her friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Joann C. Hassenplug.
