The church was filled to capacity with sorrowing relatives and friends and the body was laid to rest in the family lot where Mrs. Brita Hermanson, who preceded a few years ago, was buried.Elling Hermanson was born in Eiks Sogn, Norway, April 14, 1839. He left Norway when he was 22 years of age, it was in the fall of 1861, when he, together with Mr. and Mrs. Gutrom Honsey and Mrs. Honsey's sister (Brita), set sail together with a few others, on board the sail ship Victoria. After three weeks and two days on the ocean, they landed in Quebec. He took a train to Long Prairie, Illinois, where he worked for some relatives for six months and then went to Norway Grove, Wisconsin and worked for four years.In 1865, Rev. H.A. Preus performed the ceremony that united in marriage the lives of Brita Olsdatter (Mrs. Honsey's sister) and Elling Hermanson. Soon after their marriage they left for Winneshiek County, Iowa. Here they remained for two years when Elling began to have ambitions to own a farm of his own. He had heard about some large tracts of timber land in Winnebago County that could be bought at a reasonable price, and together with some other, he set out on a trip of investigation in the fall of 1867. On this trip, he bought 160 acres of Winnebago land at $3 per acre. With sufficient to make a part payment on the land, an ox team and a healty ambition to work, Elling began the labors on the farm where he has resided these 61 years.The early days of pioneering was anything but enjoyment. The hardships of those early winters under trying conditions in the matter of food and shelter made it a task that only the sterner ones could withstand. The story of one of those early winter storms, as told by O.N. Flugum in this historical sketch, published in the isergutten of May 1927, is a very interesting description of pioneer life during those early days.Mr. and Mrs. Elling Hermanson were practice farmers, energetic and ambitious. After having withstood those first hard winters year by year they progressed toward better conditions both in their mode of living and surroundings. Through hard work and economy Mr. and Mrs. Hermanson became well to do in a financial way and retired to give over the farm work to their children of which they had eleven.Mrs. Hermanson passed away December 6, 1922. Three of their children have preceded them in death. They are Ingeborg (Mrs. N.H. Brakke), Johanna Regin and Julie Serina.The children who survive are Sever Hermanson, farmer near Leland; Bertha (Mrs. C.N. Flugum), near Leland; Ole Hermanson, farmer near Lake Mills; John Hermanson, farmer near Scarville; Henry Hermanson, who works the home place where his father died. Marie (Mrs. I.N. Flugum) north of Lake Mills; Anna (Mrs. A.O. Tweeten), south of Lake Mills; Edward Hermanson, farmer near Albert Lea, Minn.Elling Hermanson enjoyed good health until about a year ago. The last week of December he suffered a stroke of paralysis which left him helpless until the time of his death, Monday evening at six o'clock, June 11, 1928.Elling and Brita Hermanson leave 93 descendants (101 counting those who have died). They have eight children, 41 grandchildren, 43 great-greandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.Elling and Brita were church members of the Lutheran faith. They lived a Christian life and reared their children in the Christian faith. They have gone on to the reward that is promised the faithful. The lived long and useful lives. May the memory of their sacrifices and teachings be heeded for many years by those who are to follow in their footsteps.
