The deceased was identified by Michigan State Police as 76 year old, Ellsworth "Alex" Curran. ---According to Calhoun County Deputy Medical Examiner Herb Humphrey, Curran was found dead at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, by a neighbor-friend who reportedly entered the home to take the elderly man to the grocery store. ---Dr. Bader Cassin, Calhoun County Medical Examiner, performed an autopsy Wednesday evening, and stated that Curran suffered a fatal blow to the head with a blunt instrument sometime Tuesday night. ---Neighbors at the scene told the Chronicle that Curran was recovering from a broken hip, which was caused by a fall last May. He reportedly returned from the hospital early in June and was still utilizing a walker at the time of his death. Neighbors and friends were taking turns escorting him to and from the store. ---A friend stated that the victim was found laying face down on a cot inside the trailer, but other reports place the body in a chair near a table. All reports claim Curran's head had dried blood on it. Other information from Michigan State Police was unavailable at press time. ---Funeral arrangements are pending at the Court-Putnam Funeral Home. Marshall (MI) Evening Chronicle Friday, July 16, 1982 Obituaries Ellsworth Curran ---Ellsworth "Alex" Curran, age 75, 22732 23 Mile Road, Partello, died at his home Tuesday, July 13. ---Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 17 at Partello Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Court-Putnam Funeral Home. ---Mr. Curran was born July 30, 1906 in Jackson County to John and Jane (Billman) Curran. He lived in Partello most of his life working on area farms. ---He is survived by one nephew, Norman Sine of Marshall, and one niece, Betty Curran of Springport. Marshall (MI) Evening Chronicle Monday, August 23, 1982 District Courts Two Olivet men were bound over following examination in 10th District Court to Circuit Court for arraignment on murder charges stemming from the July 13 beating death of Ellsworth D. Curran. Lonnie L. Cobern, 22880 23 Mile Rd., Olivet and James C. Cole, 22850 23 Mile Rd., Olivet, were both remanded to the county jail in lieu of bond to await arraignment on or before Sept. 9.
