Ellwood graduated from the George School in Newtown, PA. He then completed two years of study at Washington College, Chestertown, MD, and served two years in the regular Army before entering the Academy on a Senatorial appointment. After graduation, Woody earned his pilot wings and, at the close of advanced training, he married Frances Bobo in December 1942. He qualified to fly B-24s, known as the "liberators" and was on his way to combat duty with the Eighth Air Force in England. On 6 Jun 1944, Woody celebrated his 27th birthday and joined the Allies celebrating D Day—the beginning of Hitler's demise. Woody flew his share of combat missions, 33 in all, and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals. His love for flying continued after WWII and into the Cold War, and he earned his senior pilot rating. During the Berlin Airlift, he flew regularly scheduled runs from Rhein-Main to Tempelhof. For his airmanship and excellent service during the airlift, Woody earned his fourth Air Medal. By 1952, Woody had been promoted to major and he and Frances were the proud parents of three boys. A mental-disorder changed Woody's life and he was discharged with a medical disability as a captain. His condition was diagnosed and treated as manic-depressive, bipolar affective disorder. The Claggett family moved to Woody's boyhood hometown. After a short settling-in period, Woody accepted employment as a Right-Of-Way agent with the Maryland State Highway Administration until retiring a second time in 1978. Frances died of cancer in early 1987. Woody reestablished a relationship with the former Harriet Weaver, a woman he knew from his Academy days. In late 1987, they married and added three more children and two grandchildren to the combined family. Woody and Harriet settled down and spent their golden years together in Easton, MD. They enjoyed eleven and a half years of deep joy and happiness together. As a member of the Third Heaven Friend's Meeting, Woody's memorial service was held at the Friend's Meeting House in Easton, where he is buried.
