Description	:	Elmer A. Jurgens, 97, of Gibbon died Sunday, February 7, 2016 at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be Friday, February 12, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Gibbon Baptist Church in Gibbon, NE. Rev. Matt Wolf will officiate and burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon. Jurgens, 97, of Gibbon died Sunday, February 7, 2016 at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Funeral services will be Friday, February 12, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Gibbon Baptist Church in Gibbon, NE. Rev. Matt Wolf will officiate and burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon. Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney are in charge of arrangements. He was born January 29, 1919 in Wilcox, NE to George and Alma Rühs Jurgens. He grew up in various towns including Wilcox, Inavale and Red Cloud. In 1935, at the age of 15 the family moved to Gibbon. On December 16, 1941 he married Alice Schroeder in Smith Center, KS. Elmer is a veteran of WWII, serving as a Medic in the U.S. Army Airforce from February 18, 1942 – September 12, 1945. He and his wife farmed in Dix, NE then at 2 farms north of Gibbon. He then worked as a propane salesman and serviceman for Central Nebraska Coop in Gibbon for 29 years before retiring in 1984. He also worked part time from 1992-2008 for his son Lonnie Jurgens in his carpentry business. He was a member of the American Legion Post #310 of Gibbon, past member of Kearney V.F.W. Post # 759 and the Independent Order of Oddfellows Lodge He attended the Gibbon Baptist Church and was an active member of the Gibbon Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, gardening and fishing. He loved kids and helped his wife Alice with her child care business in their home. He was known as the “Sucker Man” by many children on his propane route because he always had a sucker for them. Surviving relatives include daughters, Ellamay McCormick and husband Terry of Fontana, CA, Ruth Galloway and husband Larry of Gibbon, NE, Connie Shafer and husband Robert of Lincoln, NE, Carol Wilkie and husband Russell of Anselmo, NE, June Blumenthal and husband Joe of Gibbon, NE, Pamela Franks and husband Rick of Gibbon, NE; sons, Lonnie Jurgens and wife Heather of Gibbon, NE and Paul Jurgens and wife Beth of Gibbon, NE; 24 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren and sister Henrietta Hartge of Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Michael Wilkie; great grandson, Aaron McCormick; brothers, Henry, Lorance, Gerhard, Leslie; sisters, Ann Bailey, Idella Carpenter and Velma Curry.
