He was born July 17, 1864, in the home in which he died. Mr. Sickles was married February 24, 1889 to Mamie Sloan, who passed away April 30, 1934. He is survived by a son, Frank Elmer, two daughters, Elva Imogene Fiddler, and Garland Vada Stroburg, ten grandchildren and one great-grandson, all residents of the Athelstan, Ia., community. Sloan of Geneva, died at his home in Taylor county, Iowa, July 5, 1835. He was born July 17, 1864, in the home in which he died. Mr. Sickles was married February 24, 1889 to Mamie Sloan, who passed away April 30, 1934. He is survived by a son, Frank Elmer, two daughters, Elva Imogene Fiddler, and Garland Vada Stroburg, ten grandchildren and one great-grandson, all residents of the Athelstan, Ia., community. Mr. and Mrs. Sickles made a number of friends in and around Geneva on their visits to relatives here. Mr. Sickles was a devoted support of the Republican Party, and while never seeking or accepting political preferment, he took a keen interest in public affairs, and he was a man of much influence in his community. Through toil and thrift, Mr. and Mrs. Sickles accumulated a competence, observing the rule of balancing the budget annually, and never spending beyond their earnings. The funeral was held at the home Sunday, July 7, being conducted by Rev. W. H. Warrior. The spacious home was filled with many sorrowing friends. The body was brought to Geneva, a short service being held Monday morning. The body was placed in a crypt beside that of his wife in the Sloan mausoleum, built in the Geneva cemetery with funds provided by a deceased brother, Frank W. Sloan. Rev. W. H. Shoaf officiated at the service here in front of the mausoleum. Charles H. Sloan and son William attended the funeral service at Athelstan. Those who came here for the service and interment were Frank Sickles, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Stroburg, Dewey Fiddler, Elmer Fluke, a grandson, and wife Meredith Fluke and Cassis King, neighbors of the deceased, Madeline Fluke, and glen Sickles, nephew. E. F. Wetmore conveyed the body here and assisted F. B. Ashton in placing it in the crypt. The Nebraska Signal July 11th, 1935 page 1.
