Description	:	Elmer Asseln, 89, of rural Ireton, Iowa passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2014 at St. John Lutheran Church, Craig, Iowa. Interment will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Craig. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Elmer Asseln was born April 6, 1925 on the family farm in Grant Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa to Dick and Kate (Ommen) Asseln. At the age of 2, the family moved to a farm south of Lincoln, Nebraska. Elmer attended country school near the family farm. In 1937, the family moved back to a farm near Craig, Iowa. As a teenager Elmer assisted his father with farming and raising livestock. Elmer was united in marriage to Shirley Crowley on July 19, 1947 in Le Mars. Elmer and Shirley farmed near Craig and owned Asseln Cattle Company for many years. Elmer and Shirley enjoyed traveling through South and North Dakota and Wyoming. The couple retired in 1978 and continued to live on an acreage west of Craig. Elmer was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church and had served the church on the council for several years. He also had served on the board of the Craig elevator. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Ping of Maple Grove, Minnesota; a son, Keith Asseln of Craig; a grandson, Ryan Ping of Maple Grove, Minnesota; a sister, Shirley Ludwig and her husband Ray of Augusta, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Kate (Ommen) Asseln; his wife Shirley on August 23, 2011; a daughter-in-law, Becky Asseln; a son-in-law Roger Ping; two sisters, Lorene Harms and Kathleen Cronin; and a brother Marvin Asseln.
