Description	:	Elmer "Mac" McDermeit was born February 10, 1933 in Ringwood Oklahoma. At the age of 8 his family moved to Colony, KS. Mac met his childhood sweetheart Patricia Boone at Colony Elementary School in 3rd grade and later married her on December 5, 1950 in Iola, KS. From 1951 to 1953, he attended Allen County Junior College on basketball scholarship. At the age of 8 his family moved to Colony, KS. Mac met his childhood sweetheart Patricia Boone at Colony Elementary School in 3rd grade and later married her on December 5, 1950 in Iola, KS. From 1951 to 1953, he attended Allen County Junior College on basketball scholarship. Upon graduating with a 2-yr degree, he began teaching and coaching basketball at Welda Junior High and High School on a conditional teaching certificate. While in the Welda/Colony area, four children were born -- Rebecca, Steve, Susan and Mike. In 1963, he moved his family to Udall, KS where he continued teaching and coaching all sports. Having only 1 income and 4 growing children, Mac found it necessary to take on many additional jobs during the summers such as painting, working on farms, moving furniture, driving the school bus and baseball field preparation. While in Udall, he completed his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Education degrees from Emporia State University. In 1965, Mac became principal of Udall Elementary school which marked the beginning of a long career in elementary administration. In 1972, the McDermeit family moved to Rosalia, KS where Mac served as principal of Cassody and Rosalia Elementary Schools in the Flinthills School District. By 1978, all children had graduated from high school and Mac and Patty moved to Eldorado, KS where Mac was principal of Grandview Elementary for 2 years. Due to the failing health of Patty's parents in Colony, KS, Mac and Patty moved back to eastern Kansas where Mac was principal at La Cygne Elementary until 1983. They then moved back to Eldorado where Mac completed his 42-yr education career at Oil Hill/Venora Elementary School in 1994. In retirement, Mac and Patty moved back to Colony, KS where Mac served as interim principal in Chanute, KS for 1 year. They then moved back to Eldorado one last time in 2005. Mac faced multiple health issues beginning at age 65, but they didn't prevent Patty and Mac from enjoying their lives in retirement. Over the past 20 years they have had the fortunate opportunity of watching grandchildren's sporting events, performances and special events throughout the country. Mac and Patty also enjoyed long winter retreats to Winter Haven, FL. Throughout Mac's early life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and all sports. More recently his interests centered upon drinking coffee and sharing conversation with friends, and watching Royals Baseball. Having been an elementary principal for a large portion of his life, children held a special place in Mac’s heart. Seeing a young person smile gave Mac a great sense of fulfillment. He also placed great importance on his service to the church and God throughout his life. Churches served include Christian Church (Colony, Rosalia, La Cygne), Methodist Church (Udall and Eldorado), Baptist Church (Eldorado) and Christ Community Church (Winter Haven, FL). Mac will be remembered as a person who lived a full life of compassion, laughter and love for his family and friends.
