Rowe Elmer Ellisworth Rowe was born near Pierceville, Van Buren county, Iowa, Jan. 17, 1863, and departed this life at the Laughlen hospital at Kirksville, Mo., Oct. 17, 1935, at the age of 72 years and 9 months. He was the oldest son of Oliver and Malinda Rowe. Elmer grew to manhood on his father's farm, afterwards attending school at Ames, and taught ten terms in Van Buren county. He was united in marriage to Emma E. Patterson April 24, 1889. To this union were born three children, Pearl Mae, Wealtha Edith and Harold Wilson. Pearl, who preceded his death, Aug. 7, 1913. They moved to Pierceville and conducted the postoffice. Then he was appointed deputy auditor one term and elected county auditor for the two terms following. In 1899 they moved to their farm where they have spent the last 36 years. In early life he accepted the Christian faith and joined the Baptist church at Utica, Iowa. His life was one of active devotion to his family, his neighbors and his God. He bore his afflictions and illness with great fortitude. The end came peacefully at 1:10 on Thursday morning, ending his early career. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Guy Helterbran, and one son, Harold; two grandchildren, Harry and Glenn Helterbran, all of Stockport, Iowa. Two sisters, Mrs. Laura Mendenhall of Des Moines, and Mrs. Myrtle Glascock of Bentonsport, Iowa. Three brothers, Ose W. Rowe of Keokuk, Iowa; George Rowe and Ellis Rowe, both of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Four nieces, five nephews, one aunt, Mrs. Frank Martin of Bonaparte and one uncle, Ambrose Rowe of Oxford, Kansas, and a number of other relatives and a host of friends. Prayer service was held at the home Sunday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock. The body was then taken to the Methodist church at Utica, Iowa, where services were held, in charge of Rev. E.J. Stevens. The quartet, Frank Smith, Phillip Morris, Miss Edna Crawford and Mrs. Sam Watkins, accompanied by Mrs. Bert Morrison, sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "No Night There," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and "Going Down The Valley." the pallbearers were Harry and Glenn Helterbran, Standley Rowe, Findley Rowe, Dee Rowe, and Guss Off.
