KELSONIAN, Saturday, February 19, 1916, page 1 LOGGING ACCIDENT RESULTS FATALLY Native of Cowlitz County Passes Away at Portland Following Accident Caught between two logs at the lower Ostrander camp Thursday morning, Elmer Leonard, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Leonard of the west side was seriously crushed before the logs could be drawn apart. He was rushed to Portland as quickly as possible but the shock of the accident proved too much for the young man's robust physique, and he passed away at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland yesterday morning about 4:30. Young Leonard had started to work at the Ostrander camp Wednesday with his brothers, George and Ross. The unfortunate young man was setting chokers with Chester Beck of Lexington, and George Nelson was tending hook. He had just set the choker line about a log and stepped off onto another log with young Beck. When the pull was made on the log it was thrown into the air against the log the men were standing upon. Elmer was caught between the two logs, and young Beck was thrown many feet into the air, falling on the ground. He received two broken ribs in the fall. Leonard's right leg was badly crushed and other injuries sustained. Elmer Ernest Leonard was a native son of Cowlitz County. He was born in the Arkansaw Creek district west of Castle Rock January 24, 1891 and was 25 years and 25 days of age at the time of his passing. He continued to reside with his parents there until about eight years ago when the family removed to Kelso where he has lived ever since. Besides his sorrowing parents, and aged grandmother Mrs. F. R. Orton, he is survived by on sister and five brothers: they are Miss Grace Leonard, and George M., R. M., V. H. W.R., and Claude Leonard all making their home in this city. In the passing of Elmer the first break is made in this family circle, and the sorrow is all the keener for this reason. May more distant relatives also are residents of this vicinity as the family were early settlers in Cowlitz County. (There is no longer a stone for Elmer in 2009)
