He attended school in Johnson County and was reared in that area. Elmer was a member of a large family. When he moved to Cheyenne Wells, Colorado to farm, he was lonely at first. It didn't take him long to get acquainted since he loved baseball and was a very good player. June 30, 1930 he married Mildred Hird, who was also from a large family. Mildred's family was musical and well known in that area. Elmer and Mildred farmed in the Poole and Gibbon area for a few years, they moved to Pleasanton on February 14, 1944. they farmed near Pleasanton on the south Loup River, where their children enjoyed hunting and fishing at the Crescent Lake and the Loup River. Elmer and Mildred were the parents of four children: Norma Peterson, James, Donald, and Max. Elmer's grandfather on the paternal side came to Nebraska from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania were the Battle of Culp's Hill was fought on the family farm. Elmer's grandmother's name was Culp.
