Description	:	Elmer J. Stebbins passed away last night at 6:30 o'clock at Mercy Hospital, after suffering a heart attack. He was 69 years of age. Surviving are his wife and one brother, Archie Stebbins of Scott Township. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from his home at 306 Second Avenue NE, and 2:30 p.m. from the Methodist Church. Burial will be in Woiodlawn cemetery. (Death notice in the Oelwein Daily Register, May 9, 1940, page 7) * * * Elmer J Stebbins, eldest son of George and Mary Hawkrey Stebbins, was born near Arlington in Clayton County, Iowa on January 19, 1871. When he was about a year old his parents came to a farm east of Oelwein in Scott Township in Fayette County, where he grew to manhood. His father died when he was 13 years of age. At this tender age the responsibilities of the family rested on his shoulders, and he managed the farm, making a home for his mother and four smaller brothers. He remained on the farm with his motheruntiol he was 25 years of age, and then came to Oelwein where he first found employment as a grocer clerk. Next he went into business with his brother, Orrin. He was also employed by Conner Brothers for a number of years, and gave 15 years of service in the Chicago Great Western shops. In 1926 he opened a little store on 2nd Ave. NE, which he maintained until a few weeks ago when his health compelled him to close, and where he was greatly loved by the children of the neighborhood for his generous-sized ice cream cones. Mr. Stebbins was united in marriage to Miss Loretta Mae Rathbun on March 7, 1900. There were no children and after 35 years of devoted companionship Mrs. Stebbins departed this life on June 19, 1935. On March 16, 1938, Mr. Stebbins was again married, taking for his bride Mrs. Mary Mitchell, whose devotion in his last illness was a great comfort to him. Mr. Stebbins id survived by his widow and by only one brother, Archie Stebbins who resides on a farm east of Oelwein, and by one niece and one nephew. Three brothers have preceded him in death:Orrin in 1915, George in 1931 and Chauncey in 1939. His mother had died in 1928. Mr. Stebbins had suffered from a heart ailment for nearly two years, but only in the last month was his condition serious enough to cause him any concern. Last Monday he was taken to the Mercy Hospital for treatment and on Wednesday, May 8th at 6:30 p.m. he entered the "Promised Rest." Internment was made in the family lot in Woodlawn Cemetery.
