All the members of the family were at his bedside when the end came. Elmer James Collen was born Valley, Nebr. on December 3, 1887 and died at Orchard on March 13, 1941 at the age of 53 years, 3 months and ten days. He came to Creighton with his parents when a small boy and was reared to manhood in this community. On April 2, 1913 Mr. Collen was united in marriage to Ellen Carroll at Creighton, Nebraska. They lived on a farm seven miles west of Creighton. There their three sons, Willis Francis of Sioux City, Iowa, John Paul, at home and Lee James, who is in the United States Army at Fort Robinson, Ark., were born. They moved to town March 1, 1933 and have since made their home in Creighton. Mr. Collen operated a Conoco Filling Station here two years. He also operated a station the past four years in the B.J. Huigens building, south of George Clothes Shop and was associated with the Fairmont Creamery of Sioux City, Iowa, up to the time of his illness and death. Following the death of his father, he was elected as city assessor and was reelected last November. Besides his wife and three sons, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Tharza Collen; four brothers, Henry of Creighton; Roy of Salem, Ore.; Ray of Omaha, Lee of Somers, Iowa and one sister, Mrs. Frank Carroll of Creighton. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from the St. Ludger Catholic church. Due to the illness of the pastor, Father Windolph, Father Burke of Plainview officiated the celebrated requiem high mass and preached the sermon. The church was filled with friends, which attested to the esteem of the deceased. Of the many floral pieces, a large part were contributed by the Creighton businesses and professionals. Interment was made in St. Ludger cemetery.
