His brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kaloupek, who lived with him, were just outside the house. They heard the shot and heard the victim fall to the floor. Despondency over ill health and worry over financial matters are believed to have prompted the victim to take his life. An illness of Infantile paralysis when he was only three years old had left him a cripple for life. He had been compelled to wear a brace on one leg and carried a cane in order to walk. While up and around the farm most of the time, he suffered periodic attacks of illness which occasionally confined him to his bed. Mr. Konicek was hit hard financially by the depression. Dr. B. F . McNeil, of Clutier, was called immediately after the suicide, held that the cause of death was clear and that no inquest was necessary. Mr. Konicek was born and reared to manhood on the farm southeast of Clutier where he died. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Konicek, settled in the old town of Waltham in an early day. His father was a shoemaker in Waltham several years. When the building of the Milwaukee railroad across Tama county more than fifty years ago spelled the doom of Waltham, Mr. and Mrs. Konicek started farming eighty acres within a mile and a quarter of the future town of Clutier. Elmer was the only son. The father died about eighteen years ago, and the mother about four years later. The Rev. Father Thomas Vopatek at the funeral service for Elmer Monday recalled that Mrs. Joseph Konicek was the first adult member of Immaculate Conception church parish he had buried after becoming pastor of the Clutier church about fourteen years ago. Elmer never married. Although handicapped by a crippled leg from childhood, he was industrious and hard worker. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ed Kaloupek and Mrs. Joseph Kesl, wife of the Elberon merchant. He was a cousin of the Hora boys, the Parizeks and other families of Oneida township. The funeral was held Monday, the Rev. Father Thomas Vopatek conducting a short service at the home at 9 o'clock, followed by church service in Clutier at 9:45, which was attended by a large crowd.
