MITCHELL, 86, 401 East 14th street, a retired farmer and educator who was a pioneer in bringing electricity to rural Fulton county, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Canterbury Manor nursing home. He had been ill for three years. Mr. Mitchell was born Aug. 6, 1890 in Windfall to Grant and Renee THRAWL MITCHELL. He was married in Tipton on June 24, 1928 to Mildred ROBERTS, who survives. He was a member of Grace United Methodist church and the Tipton Masonic lodge. Mr. Mitchell was graduated from Indiana university with majors in law and education and was admitted to the Bar in Tipton county. He was a teacher, principal and superintendent in Indiana public schools, including Greenwood and Trafalgar. Ending his career in public education, Mr. Mitchell moved his family to Rochester in 1931 to manage his farm. He was chairman of the Fulton County REMC board of directors for 20 years and pioneered the develoment of muck soils in Indiana, developing with Purdue university high strains of hybrid corns. He was a director of the Farmers and Merchants bank for many years. He served on local, county, state and national committees in the interest of agriculture. Surviving with the wife are a son, Robert W. MITCHELL, Rochester; three daughters, Mrs. Marguerite FROST, Mundelein, Ill.; Mrs. H. L. (Carol) POPP Jr., Fort Wayne, and Mrs. William J. (Elaine) Van LUE, Maitland, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. S. H. (Helen) BREWER, Lakeland, Fla; a son-in-law, Fred L. LEMLER, Ann Arbor, Mich., and twelve grandchildren. Two daughters preceded in death. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home with the Rev. Fred G. KUEBLER officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. cemetery.
