Description	:	Services were held Thursday, May 12 at West Prairie Lutheran Church in Lennox for Elmer Sweeter who, following a courageous battle with cancer, died at Canton-lnwood Hospital on Monday evening, May 9, 2005. He attained the age of 83 years, 10 months and 13 days. Interment was held in the West Prairie Cemetery in Lennox with Military Rites performed by V.F.W. Post #53 and American Legion Post #3164 of Canton. Elmer Sweeter was born on a farm south of Worthing, on June 26, 1921, the son of Harry and Mollie (Meyer) Sweeter. Post #53 and American Legion Post #3164 of Canton. Elmer Sweeter was born on a farm south of Worthing, on June 26, 1921, the son of Harry and Mollie (Meyer) Sweeter. He attended Nelson Rural School and grew up there. Elmer served in the US Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II with the 96th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. On April 17, 1943 he was united in marriage to Bernice Larson in Lennox. Following his discharge they farmed three miles south of Worthing for three years. In 1949 they moved to their farm east of Worthing until 1984 when they moved to Canton. Elmer continued assisting with farming until his illness one year ago. He was preceded in death by his father in 1965, his mother in 1989, an infant sister, Carol Ann, in 1931 and one brother, Harold Sweeter in 2001. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Bernice; four children: Barb Schroder and her husband, Woody, of Tea, Sherrlyn Garrow and her husband, Lowell "Shorty" of Sioux Falls, Garland Sweeter and his wife, Pat, of Sioux Falls and Karla Hill of Canton; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren; 3 brothers and their wives: Gerhard and Esther Sweeter of Canton; Fred and Mollie Sweeter of Milbank and Don and Helen Sweeter of Worthing; 2 sisters: his twin, Elaine Farmer of Sioux Falls and Dorothy VanBockern and her husband, Dick, of Canton; sisters-in-law, Jewel Sweeter of Worthing and Alta Jensen and her husband Ralph of Beresford; many other relatives and a host of friends.
