Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Canton Lutheran Church with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton. Gerhard was born Jan. 12, 1920 on a farm south of Worthing, SD, to Harry and Mollie (Meyer) Sweeter. He attended Nelson Country School near Worthing. Gerhard married Esther Johnson Dec. 15, 1940 in Lennox, SD. They lived near Canton where Gerhard farmed and fed cattle. He was a member of Canton Lutheran Church. In his younger years, Gerhard enjoyed playing softball, where he pitched for the Worthing team. He was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and he and his wife enjoyed square dancing. He loved to visit and spend time with family and friends. Grateful for having shared his life are: his wife, Esther; his children- Linda (Ron) Aten, Abilene, TX, Larry (Dorothy) Sweeter, Marshalltown, IA, and Carole (Dale) Curtis, Ipswich, SD; 4 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers- Fred (Molly) Sweeter, Milbank, SD and Don (Helen) Sweeter, Worthing, SD; 2 sisters- Elaine Farmer, Sioux Falls and Dorothy (Dick) Van Bockern, Canton; 2 sisters-in-law- Bernice Sweeter, Canton and Jewel Sweeter, Worthing, SD; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers- Elmer and Harold, and an infant sister, Carol. Memorials may be directed to Lincoln County 4-H Leaders, Lincoln County Extension Office, Canton.
