March 13, 2000 - Daily Times Herald - Mass of the Christian burial for Elmer Fred Lappe Sr. of Carroll will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. Mr. Lappe, 79, died at the Veterans Home in Marshalltown on Sunday, March 12, 2000, following a long illness. Rev. Laurence Burns will officiate the Mass. Lector will daughter Mary Jo Melius and gift bearers will be Christina Berner, Roxanna Underberg, and Adam Underberg. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll, and the Maurice Dunn American Legion Post of Carroll will serve as honor guard, casket bearers and perform military honors. Visitation begins at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. A rosary will be held at 3 p.m. and a Christian wake service will follow at 7:30 p.m. A son of William Joseph and Anna (Pietig) Lappe, he was born on May 17, 1920, at Carroll. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul school through eighth grade, then later attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids for two years, taking business related courses. Mr. Lappe served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He married Justyne F. Fritz on Oct. 31, 1945, at the St. Angela's Academy chapel in Carroll, with Rev. Vinsfield officiating. Mr. Lappe worked as a mechanic for John Juergens Implement Co. from 1946 to 1952, and then worked from 1952 to 1955 for the Allis Chalmers business in Carroll. He worked as a parts and service man from 1955 to 1967 at Gene Hagen Buick and Pontiac firm, and from 1961 to 1966 he performed service work for International Harvester. He moved to Cedar Rapids, working as a clerk for the Iowa Liquor Store there from 1969 to 1983. Mr. Lappe then retired and moved back to Carroll, living there until relocating to the Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Mr. Lappe was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and the Maurice Dunn Post of the American Legion. Survivors include five daughters, Vicki Gross and her husband, Ben, of Breda; Roxanne Strabala and her husband, Patrick, of Madison, Wis.; Anne Blackeley and her husband, Dick, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Mary Jo Melius and her husband, John, of Madison; and Kimberly Bralley of Phoenix, Ariz.; five sons, John T. Lappe, of Cedar Rapids; Mark Lappe of Cedar Rapids; Louis Lappe and his wife, Edith, of Germany; Elmer Lappe Jr. of Cedar Rapids; and Luke Lappe and his wife, Stephanie, of Phoenix; 11 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin (Bill) Lappe and his wife, Rose Mary, of Carroll; and Earl Lappe and his wife, Evelyn, of Azle, Texas. Mr. Lappe was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Matthew; a sister, Viola; and a brother, Roger.
