Curtis, 86, a 60-year resident of Cashmere, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 1995, in Colonial Vista Convalescent Center, following an extended illness. She was born Dec. 19, 1908, to Martin Tobias and Martha Novella (Turner) Troutman in Iredell County, N.C. At an early age she moved with her family to Butte, Mont., where her mother ran a boarding house. Her family moved to Oroville in the late 1910s, where she attended junior high and high school. She married Bernard C. Curtis on Dec. 24, 1925, at Omak, where they made their first home. They moved to Cashmere in 1930. They opened a grocery store, Curtis-C Market, in 1932. They later opened another store in Cashmere, the Columbia Market, which was located near the Schmitten Lumber Mill. They were also involved in building and operating grocery stores in Monitor and Leavenworth. They opened Curtis Thriftway in 1956 in East Wenatchee, where the Food Depot is now located. They and their son Bob operated the store until selling it in 1972. After retiring, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis continued to live in Cashmere. Mrs. Curtis moved to the Colonial Vista Convalescent Center in 1990. Mr. Curtis died on Aug. 15, 1993. Mrs. Curtis was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church in Cashmere and had been a longtime member of the Ladies Club in Cashmere. Survivors include two sons, Bob of Wenatchee and Dick of Kent; a daughter, Carolyn McCart of East Wenatchee; a sister, Helen Stewart of Kittitas; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
