Description	:	Elroy "Lefty" Gloystein passed away peacefully on the morning of July 9, 2012, at the age of 90. The oldest of four boys, he was born in Waco, Neb., to Hannah and Frederick Gloystein on Dec. 6, 1921. He grew up on a farm, and at an early age developed a passion for building and tinkering with radios, which continued through life. Read More	Elroy "Lefty" Gloystein passed away peacefully on the morning of July 9, 2012, at the age of 90. The oldest of four boys, he was born in Waco, Neb., to Hannah and Frederick Gloystein on Dec. 6, 1921. He grew up on a farm, and at an early age developed a passion for building and tinkering with radios, which continued through life. In 1942 he enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving four years in various locations including Washington, D.C., and the South Pacific as a cryptographic specialist. After military service he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. His many campus activities included election to the Innocents Society and became a lifetime member of the Nebraska Alumni Association. He excelled as a southpaw pitcher for the UNL Baseball team, lettering four years. There he acquired the nickname "Lefty" which he went by the rest of his life. Both his military and baseball careers were special in his life and he loved to share his experiences, telling stories from those times. After college graduation in 1951 Elroy accepted an engineering position with RCA Broadcast in Camden, NJ where he was involved in the early development of color television. He published a number of technical papers as an RCA Project Engineer in color TV. After 18 years at RCA Elroy accepted a consulting position in Burlingame and the family relocated to Palo Alto. The move to Davis came in 1987, upon his retirement, as well as Elaine's retirement from Stanford University.
