Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 5 p.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Elsie was born Sept. 24, 1928, in rural Owego, Iowa, the tenth child of Thomas Franklin and Demis (Hansbrough) Fowler. At the age of 4, the family moved to Smithland, Iowa, where she attended school. She graduated from Smithland High School. She married Donald Alfred Newman in 1947, in Sioux City. The couple had four children and also cared for 11 foster children. She was a homemaker. Don's job with Northern Natural Gas Company took the family to Sioux City, Homer, Neb., Paullina, Iowa, Madison, S.D., Clark, S.D. and Carlton, Minn. She was a certified tutor, volunteering many years for the National Affiliation for Literacy. She volunteered as a Red Cross Gray Lady at the Clark, S.D., nursing home. During Desert Storm, she wrote daily to service personnel and answered all letters she received. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and reading. Following retirement in 1984, the couple returned to Smithland and spent many happy years fishing at their cabin on Otter Tail Lake, Minn. and then moved to Whiting, Iowa. Survivors include two daughters, Gloria (Marty) Kloster of Brookings, S.D., and Susan Oja of Duluth, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Vicky Newman of Whiting, Iowa; five grandchildren, Michelle, Martin, Tina, Amanda and Alexandrea; four great-grandsons, Robert, Remington, Reno and Martin Jr.; two sisters, Betty Sulsberger of Onawa and Eva (Lavern) Duhigg of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Harold (Ruth) Fowler of Smithland; two sisters-in-law, Mae Newman of Sioux City and Alma Stekelenberg of Grove, Okla.; and cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her husband, Don, who passed away Aug. 18, 2004, in Sioux City, she was also preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Ray and Eva Newman; an infant daughter, Patty Ann; a son, Donald Ray; four brothers, Raymond, Fred, Allen "Jack" and her twin Everett; two sisters, Dorothy Blackford and Mildred Wilson; and four brothers-in-law, Donald Sulsberger, Everett Wilson, Daryl Newman and Carl Stekelenberg.
