Description	:	Harold C. Fowler, 85, a lifetime resident of Smithland, Iowa, passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, with his wife, daughter and son-in-law at his bedside. Services were 11 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Smithland, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Leslie F. Seaton Post 666. Harold was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Luton, Iowa, to Thomas and Demis (Hansborough) Fowler. He graduated from Smithland High School. He entered the U.S. Army in January 1942, during World War II. He was stationed at Schoffield Barracks in Hawaii. He was shipped to the island of Kwajalein, which the United States overtook and used as a refueling point for their bombers. Upon returning home, he met Ruth Ann Scott, who was a teacher at the Smithland school. The couple were united in marriage on Aug. 9, 1947. To this union a daughter, Linda Fowler, was born. They purchased and operated Fowler's Grocery Store until 1955. He also drove a school bus and worked on highway construction before obtaining the job of rural mail carrier in 1959 with a route of 103 miles. He retired with 30 years of service. He was a 50-year member of Smithland United Methodist Church, American Legion Leslie F. Seaton Post 666 and the Sioux City Abu Bekr Shrine. He supported the Westwood Athletics Department by donating apples to the team members for many years. In 1959 he was selected to serve on the Woodbury County Board of Conservation and served for 29 years. In 1970 a county park just west of Smithland was named Fowler Forest in his honor. He was an avid hunter from the time he was a small child. He also enjoyed finding mushrooms, fishing, reading, going to the casinos and a good cigar. He loved spending hours on Flower Acres, cutting trees and fixing fence. Survivors include his wife, Ruth of South Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Ron Jensen of South Sioux City; a granddaughter and her husband, Shawn and Curt Mischnick of Lincoln, Neb.; three great-grandchildren, Sydney, Taylor and Lauren Mischnick; a sister, Eva Duhigg of Vancouver, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews including, Garry, Tom, Ray and Everett Fowler. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, Dorothy McCann, Jack Fowler, Fred Fowler, Mildred Wilson, Betty Sulsberger, Elsie Newman, Everett Fowler and Raymond Fowler; and two nephews, Ed Sulsberger and Donnie Newman.
