Note: the obituaries for both Samuel and Rachel Bonnett mention the specific death date of March 2, 1920 for Elsie. The Maple Hill Cemetery transcription done in 1998 & 1999 uses the death date of "1917", presumably based on the headstone inscription. Note: re Headstone for Elsie Jane Bonnett Caruthers. The inscription is misengraved with "wief" instead of "wife" and the death year as engraved is 1917 Headstone photo by Richard K Thompson, August 14, 2011. ----------- The following obituary transcription for Elsie was provided by another contributor on March 2, 2016. It should be noted that this obituary does state that Elsie died on March 2,1920 at the Jefferson County Hospital, which would be at Fairfield, Iowa. However, due to the loss of certain death records in Jefferson county, there are, quite literally, no death records available for the year 1920. In addition, there does not appear to be any obituary published for Elsie in either of the two Fairfield area newspapers that were publishing in March, 1920. The exact newspaper source for the following obituary was not provided, but may have been from one of the newspapers published in Van Buren county. Whether or not the text as transcribed was verbatim or paraphrased isn't known at this time. Source: Van Buren Co. Elsie Bonnett Carruthers Elsie Jane Bonnett was born November 27, 1893, four miles northeast of Birmingham in Van Buren County, Iowa, and departed this life at the Jefferson County hospital March 2, 1920. She was the youngest child of Jasper and Rachel Bonnett. On November 27, 1917, she was united in marriage to Neal Carruthers. To this union was born a little daughter, Neala Elizabeth. Elsie was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Birmingham. She was an affectionate and kind hearted woman. Elsie was widely known, being a graduate of Birmingham High School, class of 1913, and a successful teacher in Jefferson and Van Buren Counties for a number of years. She leaves to mourn her loss, an aged father and mother of this city, two brothers, Jessie of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Charles of Davenport, Iowa. Also a husband and little daughter and a host of many relatives and friends. Floral offerings were contributed by the Rebecca Lodge of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Charles of Davenport, Iowa, also her Sunday School and High School Classes of this place, and other friends and relatives in token of the esteem of which she was held. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. March 5 at the home of her father-in-law, T. H. Carruthers. Rev. Roberts pastor of the Presbyterian church assisted by Rev. R. N. Bailey, pastor of the Free Methodist church officiating. Text used Heb, 2:15. Internment in the Birmingham cemetery -------------- Also, the obituary for "Jasper Bonnett" refers to "Mrs. Elsie Carruthers". Again, there is a discrepency in the names as the cemetery transcription (and her headstone) uses the name "Caruthers". The cemetery transcription provides that Elsie Jane Bonnett was the wife of "N.B Caruthers"; though one with that name is not buried in this cemetery evidently.
