Elta Mae Barger, daughter of Boaz and Sebia Barger, was born near Lovilia, Iowa, January 14, 1898. She received her elementary education in rural schools in Monroe and Appanoose counties, graduating in 1916 from Seymour High School. Later she attended the University of Iowa and taught school six years in Ida and Woodbury counties. In 1919 she attended Mercy School of Nursing in Des Moines and did practical nursing during the World War I flu epidemic. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and U.M.W. She married John W. Petersen Sr. on December 21, 1922, in Des Moines. They lived on a farm near Midway for 40 years, retiring in 1963. Her husband John died October 22, 1984. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Martha) Hanson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, two sons, Walter of Sioux City and Benjie of Correctionville, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents, four sisters, three brothers, her husband John and one son, John Jr.
