Thursday, September 13, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Elton (Al) Borsheim was born on April 3, 1951 in Decorah, Iowa, the youngest of seven children of Elmer and Gladys (Spilde) Borsheim. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He attended Decorah Community Schools. Al was united in marriage to Janet Blockhus on January 11, 1969 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. This union was blessed with three sons: Chad, Cory and Jason. After their marriage, they moved to Cedar Rapids. Al had various jobs and then started his own business, Al's Skelly in Cedar Rapids. In 1977 they moved back to Decorah to raise their family and Al started Al Borsheim Construction, an excavation business. He later worked for Steve Downing Construction and then started working for Bruening Rock Products and Skyline Construction on May 28, 1996. Also, for many years, he was the grave digger at both Lutheran and Phelps cemeteries in Decorah. He was very proud of that work and felt it was something he could do for a family at a very difficult time in their lives. Al was an avid NASCAR fan and he liked to watch his son Jason and the neighborhood kids race. He loved Decorah, his first cocker spaniel Mandy, and talking about cars, engines, racing, and motorsports. He also used to race stock cars and do drag racing. Al was a handyman who could fix anything. His sons were active in the Decorah Kilties. In 1982, he served as president of the Kilties and he helped organize their 50th anniversary celebration. This included a trip to the World's Fair in Knoxville, TN to perform there, along with Chicago and other cities. He was very proud of his kids, loved his whole family and always enjoyed doing things with his wife Janet. They were always together. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Verl in 1998. Al is survived by his wife Janet; three sons: Chad (Tammi) of Kelley, IA, Cory (special friend Paula Weistroffer) of Coralville, IA and Jason (Nicole) of Decorah; two grandchildren, Tayler and Briesen; two brothers: Mert (Susie) Borsheim of Hiawatha, IA and Ron (Sue) Borsheim of Decorah; three sisters: Mavis (Darrell) Frey of Decorah, Elaine Slaymaker of Marion, IA and Janice (Wayne) Engelhardt of Lime Springs, IA; and by many nieces and nephews.
