ELVIRA NEGUS IS LAID TO REST Mrs. Elvira [Fawcett] Negus, an early settler of Cedar county, passed away July 24, at the age of ninety years, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ebenezer Fogg, as noted herein last week. Mrs. Negus came to Cedar county in 1848, where she and her husband, Elisha Negus, lived in a log cabin, which was built by the later's father Sherlock Negus. This cabin was situated sixteen and one quarter miles directly east of Iowa City, which city was then known as Iowa City Timber. This cabin contained two rooms down stairs, and two rooms upstairs and was plastered with clay. It was at this time that the survey of wagon road was made between Iowa City and the town of Rochester, which is a distance of twenty miles. This survey was marked by the ploughing of a furrow, a greater part of which was done by Sherlock Negus. Only one house existed between the cabin and Iowa City at the time that Mrs. Negus came to Cedar county. She was united in matrimony with Elisha Negus, in 1848, and had resided in the Springdale neighborhood ever since. Her husband, a highly successful farmer, preceded her to the better home many long years. Mrs. William Mather, Mrs. E. Fogg and Mrs. William Ellyson are daughters, residing at Springdale; Attorney Henry Negus, of Iowa City, is a son and Mrs. John Rood of the Isle of Pines, is a daughter.
