At 5 o'clock Thursday morning Mrs. Hinkley had not arisen. Her daughter went to her room at 6 o'clock and Mrs. Hinkley was gone. She was traced to the bank of the river. At 5 o'clock Thursday evening her body was discovered floating on the waves of the great river about 12 miles below Alexandria. Two fishermen in a boat were entering the mouth of a creek when one of them happened to glance out over the river and saw a floating body which proved to be that of Mrs. Hinkley. It was floating face downward. There was no water in her lungs, and part of her clothing was still dry. It is supposed the shock from falling into the cold water caused instant death, and hence the body did not sink. The men recovering the body immediately took it to Canton, where the coroner held an inquest over it. E.E. Hawkes went from Keokuk to Canton and brought the body back to Alexandria, where it was prepared for burial. The funeral services were held at the home at Alexandria Sunday, but the interment was made at Keokuk. The Constitution-Democrat says: "Mrs. Hinkley was a woman with an extensive acquaintance around Alexandria, where, with the exception of the ten years she lived in Keokuk, she had made her home for upwards of half a century. She was a woman loved by the entire community and the sympathy of the hundreds of friends of the family, not only in Alexandria but in Keokuk, is extended." The only near surviving relatives are Otto F., a son, and Miss Ina W., a daughter, both of Alexandria, and S.D. Fellows of Keosauqua, a brother, Mrs. Hinkley was about 79 years of age. She was born in Luzerne county, Pa., Dec. 8, 1829, and came to this county with her parents in 1837. Handwritten: St. Line Dem. Wed. 23 Dec. 1908
