Coulbourne, prominent and highly esteemed young businessman of Crisfield, succumbed to the ravages of Brights Disease at the home of his parents in this city at 7 o'clock last Sunday morning, after a brave fight for life, over a period of several months. Until a very few days before the end came, his physician was hopeful of his recovery, but he began to sink on Saturday, and his soul passed to the bosom of his maker with the coming of the Sabbath morn. Mr. Coulbourne was 36 years of age and was an only son of Mr. and Mrs. George Coulbourne, aged and highly respected residents of this city. He was born in Crisfield and spent his entire life here, being educated at the public schools of the community. After leaving school he accepted employment with the Adams Express Company in Crisfield, where he remained for some time, leaving that position to accept a position as a member of the Clerical force of the Bank of Crisfield. After being connected with the bank for several years, he accepted a position with the wholesale firm of H.L. Loreman & Bro. from which position he went to the Consumers Ice Company. Mr. Coulbourne held a responsible position in the management of the Consumers Company for three years past, being compelled however, to give up active duties several months ago when his health became impaired. Mr. Coulbourne was one of the most active members of Immanuel M.E. Church, and had been prominent in church and religious work for several years past. Three years ago he was ordained as a Local Preacher, and it was his life’s ambition to become a member of the ministry. This ambition would doubtless have been realized had he have been spared to life. In addition to his church activities, Mr. Coulbourne was a member of the Jr. O.U.A.M., Past Master of Chesapeake Lodge of Masons, a member of Giblim Council, Chesapeake Royal Arch Masons, and a Past Exalted Ruler of Crisfield Lodge of Elks. He was active in all of these orders until the time of his death. In the passing of Elwath Coulbourne, Crisfield has sustained a severe loss. He was a young man of the highest character, of admirable qualities and lovable traits. He was kind and considerate, of sympathetic, charitable disposition, and had a pleasant smile, a good word and a hearty handclasp for all he met. No young man in the community enjoyed or merited a higher degree of public respect and esteem, and no death could occur in the entire community would cause more universal grief. “Fats,” as he was lovingly known to thousands of friends, was prepared to face the mystery beyond the grave—he has set his house in order, and looked smilingly into the face of his maker as the gates of the Beautiful City unfolded before his gaze. But the community which he has left, was not prepared to lose him, and his absence will be sorely felt. His aged parents have the deep sympathy of thousands of friends throughout the Eastern Shore, who share their sorrow in this hour of bereavement. Funeral services were held from Immanuel M.E. Church last Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. John J. Bunting, assisted by Rev. J.L. Johnson of Wilmington, Rev. R.H. Wilson of Marion, Rev. C.M. Elderdice, pastor of Mt. Pleasant M.P. church, and Dr. W.F. Corkran, pastor of Asbury M.E. Church, this city. The church edifice wad filled to overflowing with friends and associates, who gathered to pay their last respects to the departed, the Masonic Lodge attending in a body and conducted the ceremonies at the grave. The remains were laid to rest in Crisfield cemetery, beneath one of the largest and most beautiful floral tributes ever seen in Crisfield.
