Read More	Mr. Elwood Sterling, Sr., prominent retired plumbing contractor, died in the McCready Hospital here Sunday afternoon, following a short illness. He was 80 years of age. Born in the Asbury section, his parents were the late William T. and Annie (Sterling) Sterling, members of pioneer Somerset County families. He had been engaged in the plumbing and tinsmith contracting business for most of his life, both in Crisfield and in Baltimore, and retired about five years ago. Mr. Sterling had been a widely known and highly regarded Democratic political leader in Somerset County for years. He was elected and served as Sheriff of the county from 1912 to 1916, and was elected and served as County Commissioner from 1954 to 1958. His advice was widely sought, and he had been active in the political field up to the time of his death. For more than fifty years he had been a member of Chesapeake Lodge of Masons, and for many years was a member of Asbury Methodist Church. Like many people in the section where he lived, he was given a nickname, Freeston, early in life, and it clung to him through the years and was the name by which he was best known. Freeston was a genial man, energetic, capable, and his philosophy in life was to be helpful. He had a good word to say about almost everyone, and he was never too busy but that he would take time to help anyone in trouble or distress, and the performance of many good deeds will be found in the record of his life. People liked him, he liked people, and his friendship was warm and lasting. His home was his castle, and he made everyone who came to it welcome. The community profited by his having been a member of it. Mr. and Mrs. Sterling celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on April 11th of this year. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Asbury Methodist Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Walter L. Beckwith. Burial was in Asbury Cemetery where members of Chesapeake Lodge of Masons participated in the final rites. Bearers were members of the Masonic fraternity, E. Layton Riggin, Melvin Byrd, George W. Todd, Jr., Wilmer Daugherty, George E. Massey, Jr., and Allen Long. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Meta Marriner Sterling, and the following children: Mrs. Geo. A. (Vera) Douglas of Greenville, N.C., Mrs. Robert J. (Suzanne) Ashton of Baltimore, Mrs. Jerry (Meta Alice) Spann, of Norman, Okla., Elwood Sterling, Jr., Robert Lee Sterling and Edwin M. Sterling of Baltimore. Also, two brothers, Norman Sterling of Houston, Texas, and Robert Sterling of Crisfield; a sister, Mrs. Sula Sterling of Crisfield; thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
