Description	:	ANSON - Elwyn A. Nichols "Nick the Barber", 89, of Anson, passed away peacefully, Monday March 14, 2016. He was born at home in Starks, Dec. 8, 1926 to Clarence and Eva (Morse) Nichols. He attended grade school in Starks and then Madison High School until he was called to serve in the United States Navy during WW II. He served in the South Pacific in the 3rd and the 5th fleets under Admirals Nimitz and Halsey. After military service he used the GI bill to pay for barber school in Boston. It was here that... Read More	ANSON - Elwyn A. Nichols "Nick the Barber", 89, of Anson, passed away peacefully, Monday March 14, 2016. He was born at home in Starks, Dec. 8, 1926 to Clarence and Eva (Morse) Nichols. He attended grade school in Starks and then Madison High School until he was called to serve in the United States Navy during WW II. He served in the South Pacific in the 3rd and the 5th fleets under Admirals Nimitz and Halsey. After military service he used the GI bill to pay for barber school in Boston. It was here that the legendary "Nick The Barber" persona was unleashed on Greater Somerset County. Dad stood on his feet, his arms raised with the hair and not always appropriate humor flying for the next 58 years. On May 28, 1952, Elwyn married Blanche Mae Dunlap at her family home in Anson. Together they lived, loved and laughed for 58 years until her death in 2004. He was also predeceased by a sister, Marge (Nichols) Cates. He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl and her husband Mark Hammond of Windham, Janelle and her husband Michael Seavey of Oakland, Jill and her husband Steve Everett of Anson, and Cristen and her husband Donny Sawyer of Waterville; his siblings, Barbara Hutchinson of Industry, Raynie Nichols and his wife Jeannie of Starks, and Marilyn Nichols Laurendeau of St. Augustine, Fla., whom he and Blanche raised along with the other girls. He was the proud "Grampa" of Nicholas Hammond and his wife Melissa of Windham, Nathan Hammond and his wife Lacey of Coral Springs, Fla., Jordan Seavey and his partner Sarah Weber and her daughter Saskia Weber-Mohr of Monsey, N.Y., Jacob Sinclair of Big Sky, Mont., Christopher Everett of Sidney, Emily Sawyer of Portland, and Cameron Sawyer of Portland; great-grandsons, Brady, Calvin and Asher Hammond. The family extends their gratitude for the wonderful care given to our dad by the staff of Maplecrest Rehab. & Living Center and Beacon Hospice. Their gentle professional care for him and their thoughtful concern for us, meant so much to us all.
