Description	:	Mrs. Emaline Salter, age 86 years, 5 months and 10 days, died at her home on North Poplar street, Friday morning at 8 o'clock, of old age. Mrs. Salter was born in Franklin county, about 15 miles from Brookville, Dec. 4, 1829, her father being John Gilmore, of Irish descent, and a native of Pennsylvania. Read More	Mrs. Emaline Salter, age 86 years, 5 months and 10 days, died at her home on North Poplar street, Friday morning at 8 o'clock, of old age. Mrs. Salter was born in Franklin county, about 15 miles from Brookville, Dec. 4, 1829, her father being John Gilmore, of Irish descent, and a native of Pennsylvania. She knew very little of her ancestry, as her father ran away from his home, owing to a disagreement with his step-mother, when he came to Indiana and settled in Franklin county. Her mother was Miss Sarah Stephens, of North Carolina. When Emaline grew to young girlhood, she was united in marriage to John R. Salter, on December 4, 1844, the sixteenth anniversary of her birth. They at once settled at Centerville, Wayne county. Shortly afterward, they settled at Pin Hook, then a prosperous little village on the National road. In three years, they went to Decatur county where they resided until 1855, when they came to Tipton county and settled on the old Harvey Goodykoontz farm, just north of Atlanta. It was while they resided here that the civil war was in progress and her husband volunteered in Company K, 153rd regiment. After the return of her husband from the war, they continued to reside on the farm until his death which occurred on October 31, 1867, however, they had moved onto the Cale Shank farm and resided just south of the railroad bridge across Cicero creek. She was the mother of eight children, two having died before she was left a widow. After being left alone, she moved to town, where with true courage of a woman she struggled to maintain and rear her children. She made many sacrifices and not until all had reached the age of maturity, did she allow herself to rest. She was always an industrious woman and during her life she was quite dexterous with the needle. She had at the time of her death, a needle that she had used for nearly 25 years. With this needle she made garments, patched clothes and with it had made 21 quilts. She prized the needle very highly. The needle had been presented to her by Miss Nellie Green, daughter of the late Milton Green. She is survived by five children, namely J.E. Salter, John Salter, Mrs. John Harter, of this city and Milton Salter, of Indianapolis. There are eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Owing to the fact that she had no school opportunities, Mrs. Salter could neither read or write, however, she was a good listener and she would have others read to her until she was well informed on all subjects or general interest. She has always been cheerful and made those around her happy.
