Description	:	1.) ELVIN—At her home in Lamoni, Iowa, Tuesday, July 26, 1898, at 9 a. m., Mrs. Emeline A. Elvin, wife of Elder Robert. M. Elvin. Emeline A. Hartwell was born in Nauvoo, Hancock county, Illinois, October 4, 1845. With her parents, she removed to Carterville, Iowa, near Council Bluffs, some years after, where she was baptized into the [R.]L.D.S. church by Elder E. C. Briggs, June 20, 1861. ELVIN—At her home in Lamoni, Iowa, Tuesday, July 26, 1898, at 9 a. m., Mrs. Emeline A. Elvin, wife of Elder Robert. M. Elvin. Emeline A. Hartwell was born in Nauvoo, Hancock county, Illinois, October 4, 1845. With her parents, she removed to Carterville, Iowa, near Council Bluffs, some years after, where she was baptized into the [R.]L.D.S. church by Elder E. C. Briggs, June 20, 1861. On February 18, 1870, she was married to Elder R. K. Elvin, her home thereafter being made at Nebraska City, Nebraska, until 18--, when with her husband and family she removed to Lamoni, Iowa, where she resided until death. Mrs. Elvin had been in poor health for fourteen years. At times she had very severe spells during some of which her mind suffered with her body. She had a very severe attack last Summer, became some better during the winter and spring, but this summer had another attack. During these last two attacks, she was attended by Dr. Greer. On July 13, Dr. Hansen was called to consultation, and on July 15, Drs. Hansen and Greer made a full examination under chloroform; heretofore she had never consented to a complete examination. A large tumor was found in her left side, which was evidently the cause of her sickness and by reflex action also the cause of her mental trouble. Being too feeble for an operation for its removal, she received such palliative treatment as could be applied. For a few days, she seemed better; her fever growing less, but it was only for a few days when she again became worse and died. A husband, one son, and two daughters, with so aged and very feeble mother, are left by the deceased to mourn her departure. Mrs. Elvin was a woman of large mentality and bright mind—a model wife and mother. She has passed through an ordeal of intense physical suffering for a number of long weary years, in which husband, mother, and children have all borne their full share, and of which they have all had the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral was from the Brick at 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 27. President Joseph Smith preached the sermon and was assisted in the service by Bishop E.L. Kelley and Elder H.A. Stebbins. Sr. Emeline A. Hartwell was born in Nauvoo, Illinois, October 4, 1845. She was among the first who united with the Reorganized Church in Western Iowa, being baptized by Elder J. H. Blakeslee, brother of Bishop G. A. Blakeslee, and subsequently renewing her covenant in baptism by Elder E.C. Briggs. She was married to Elder R. M. Elvin, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, where her parents had settled at the hegira from Illinois, February 13, 1870. Died July 26, 1898. Six children have been born to them; three have been taken; three, Reuben, Mamie, (Mrs. John W. Luff, of Independence, Missouri) and Vida, who, with their father mourn their loss. Sr. Elvin's home has been at Lamoni since 1887. Here she has raised her children to man and womanhood. Here she with her husband made a home of refuge for her mother, Sr. Hartwell, aged 89 years, the day of her daughter's burial, and who has been a helpless invalid for the past thirty months. She was a great sufferer, and death was at the last a relief from pain. She rests in peace, and will be sincerely and tenderly mourned. Elvin, died at Lamoni, Iowa, on Tuesday, the 26th ult., after a protracted and painful illness covering a period of several years. Sr. Elvin was a devoted and faithful member of the church, in the interest of which she freely sacrificed that her husband might labor to advance its interests. Bro. Elvin and his family have the sincere sympathy of the saints in their sad bereavement.
