Sources: Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana _______________________ DEATH OF EMERSON BROWN -------------------- Emerson Brown was born in Staffordshire, England, Sept. 24, 1837, came to the United States in 1849 and made his home at Princeton, Indiana. When secession brought on the civil war he inlisted [sic] in the service of his adopted country in Co I, 25 Indiana Vol. Infantry and was discharged for disability in 1862, his disability resulting in an injury from which he suffered the rest of his life. He was married to Miss Mary E. Snivley on November 17, 1861, and to them were born five children, three of whom survive: Aaron, Charles and Mrs. Bertha Day. Two, William and Don, died young. He came to Iowa at the close of the war and was converted in 1867 and baptized by Elder John H. Lake and confirmed by Elder Frederick Burley at Montrose. He lived an honorable christian life. His faith and zeal were phenomenal, and he died in the triumph of faith with the hope of rising to immortality and eternal life in the first resurrection. He was an honored member of Keosauqua W. T. Harper Post, No. 79, Department of Iowa G. A. R., where for many years he served with dignity as chaplin [sic] and was holding that position when the Death Angel called. His last illness began Nov. 15, 1908, and his disease, dry gangrene, caused him great suffering. He leaves to the care and sympathy of his comrades and friends his beloved wife and three children and their families. Loved by his relatives and brethren, honored by his comrades and friends, he died January 14, 1909, at the age of 72 years, 5 months and 7 days. Funeral services were at the home in Keosauqua, January 15, 1909, at 2 p.m., Elder Jas. McKiernan of Farmington in charge, assisted by Rev. Thorn of the M. E. pastorate of Keosauqua. Interment was at the Oaklawn cemetery.
