Houston, 54, educator & physician, born Maine, parents born Maine, in Cottonwood precinct, Nance County, Nebraska with his wife Mary J., 34, born Connecticut, and daughter Grace C., 14, no birth place listed. In 1900 Emer C. Houston, widower and retired physician, born February 1831 in Maine, parents born Scotland, lived on Ida Street in Fullerton, Nance County, Nebr. with his daughter and son-in-law Grace and Alvah Jarvis and their three children. According to the 1910 census he lived in Fullerton with his widowed daughter and her five children. The census states he was 79 years old, a widower, born in Maine, parents also born in Maine. ```````````````````````````` Fullerton Post (Fullerton, Nebr.), December 5, 1912, p. 1, col. 6 OBITUARY Emerson Coleman Houston was born at Friendship, Maine, Feb. 17th 1831, and passed away Wed. evening, Nov. 27th, 1912, aged 81 years, 9 months and ten days. Mr. Houston was married twice, from the first union two children were born, a son and daughter, who survive him. In 1871 he was married the second time to Miss Mary J. Rogers and to this union were born four children, three dying in infancy, Mrs. Grace Estelle Jarvis only survivor, in whose home he spent his closing years. In early life Mr. Houston entered the ministry of the Baptist faith. Later he engaged in the profession of medicine. He spent nine years at St. Paul, Neb., where he failed in health and later he engaged in teaching and as in other lines was eminently successful and beside the proffessions Mr. Houston was a poet, having written a large number of poems, possibly the one that has been given more wide circulation than others, is the song, "Do they miss me at home, do they miss me." He was intimately acquainted with Longfellow and Whittier. He was a religious man, a member in later life of the Presbyterian church of Fullerton. For some time his health has been failing and for the past two years has been confined to his room and a great care, but his daughter, Mrs. Jarvis has watched over him in the glooming until the weary wheel of life stood still and the winning man of other years in the pulpit, the sick room, or in the hall of education, was gathered to his fathers to go out no more out forever.
